For this project I was tasked with creating a patch design no larger than 3x5 for a fictitious organization or business based off of a piece of media from the Public Domain. The patch would serve as a sort of logo for the organization of our making. An additional requirement was to create 7 total versions of the patch design using varying color “versions.”
In order to gather ideas for what sort of design I wanted to go with, I did a large amount of research into various works of fiction in order to get a variety of different ideas and directions I could go with. I ultimately decided to pursue Greek mythology as my main subject matter.
Once I had settled on Greek mythology I narrowed down to focusing on Hermes specifically as I had came up with the idea of a delivery service themed around him as one of the things he is known for is delivering messages for the other Greek gods. One of his symbols is a sandal with wings and I attempted to try several variations of sketches focused on that. I did attempt also to sketch a mail bag or a letter with wings but found that those designs weren’t really reading as well as the sandal would.
I utilized a color palette generated via Adobe in order to create multiple different sets of color schemes for the patch design (monochromatic, grayscale, complementary, analogous, triadic, etc). The orange and black patch design was an additional design I had created as I wanted to capture the look and feel of Greek pottery.
